Before the 2008 earthquake there was a modest number of house church Christians in Mao County, but after the relief efforts and witness of sacrificial believers from throughout China, the number of believers exploded in the area.

Wenchuan was the epicenter of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, where thousands of people were killed. Many of the survivors heard the gospel from rescue workers and the number of believers in the county has grown significantly.
