The article stated there were at least 70,000 Christians in the city in 1981, at a time when many Christians in China were still afraid to declare their faith openly. Fuqing had 10,000 members of The True Jesus Church in 1994: Bridge (March-April 1994).

There were 145 TSPM churches in Fuqing in 2002: TSPM China Prayer Calendar, 2002. In December 2010, missionary Dennis Balcombe visited Fuqing and reported, "Local officials told us 20% of the population were Protestant Christians": RCMI, "The Challenge of China" (March 2011).

Pingtan is known as the county in Fujian with the highest density of Christians. "Before Liberation [1949], Pingtan had a population of about 40,000. Protestants were estimated to be 4,000 to 5,000 strong, i.e. about 10% of the total population. Now, Pingtan's population has grown to 300,000 and Protestants have a registered membership of 30,000. But in general, people believe that their actual number would not be less than 60,000, i.e. 20% of the population": Bridge (July-August 1990).

In December 2010, missionary Dennis Balcombe visited registered churches on Pingyan Island and "was told by some government officials that one-third of the population are Christians. Some of the churches have 4,000 people attending each Sunday": RCMI, "The Challenge of China" (March 2011).

Although no specific figure for Fu'an County has been published, it is part of the Mindong Diocese, which had 70,000 Catholics in 1992: China Study Journal (December 1992).
