There were 40,000 Catholics in the whole of Fuyang Prefecture in 1949, but an official source states it had dropped to just 2,000 by 1992: China Study Journal (February 1992). This figure, however, only represents CPA Catholics. It is likely the sharp drop off in numbers represented a widespread transferrence of believers from the CPA to the unregistered Catholic and Evangelical house churches.
